John Hayes, originally from Michigan, came to Virginia in the early 80s in a career related move, and then to Lexington, KY in 1999. In 2009 after a 30-year career in educational and library sales, John opted for early retirement and moved back to Virginia where his wife and four children are all originally from.
His interest in woodworking lead to a small shop on Davis Street in Culpeper but he quickly realized he needed more space to supplement his custom made wood products with something that would generate more consistent sales. At his wife’s encouragement (Jan) that turned out to be antiques. Today John has thousands of items, ranging from antique pieces from the 1700s to vintage and modern items from the 1900s. His nearly 3,000 square feet of showroom space features furniture from all eras but also glass, porcelain, wall art, and other unique collectibles. John has many repeat customers and loves to let buyers know that “if you see something you like we can haggle over the price”. He believes there is usually a price-point both parties will be happy with.
His items mostly come from auctions featuring estates from the greater DC area, Central & Northern Virginia. The families of these impressive estates are generally downsizing or liquidating after generations of travel and collecting, and offer some unique and fascinating pieces to antique and collectible buyers.
