This is one of those remarkable moments to own a local yet unrecorded collectible of Charlottesville, Virginia! Wallace Nutting was a well-known photographer and author. When writing his book, Virginia Beautiful, he visited Charlottesville and its environs, taking many images. One that he did not commercially develop was this image of Representative Tuttle’s home here. It is still in its original Nutting frame and retains its Nutting penned title, signature, and location. I acquired this privately from Michael Ivankovitch over 30 years ago in a private sale. This is one of a kind!

These appear to be rare and early variants of Walker’s Chippendale side chairs or certainly Rappahannock River area. As with other Walker chairs, these have the unique “triple valley” crest rail.” They also have a rarely found C-scroll ribbon back splat and the very early carry-over pad feet from the Queen Anne era. They have the double corner blocks at the seat rails, shown below:

There are several reference books that have images that demonstrate similar designs. First is a Rappahannock side chair shown on page 95 of Hurst and Prown’s Southern Furniture. Note the identical splat:

Mammy rockers have long been a well-known furniture form in the South. Iconic in design and use, these uniquely-sized, small, two seaters were used in southern homes throughout the 19th century. Given its deep crest rail and faux-bamboo spindles, this one is most likely from the 1830s and its design is Country Empire. The woods are mostly yellow pine and tulip poplar. The painted surfaces have been restored. The soldier-blue color was determined from dabs of paint left on the surfaces, especially the underside and in various crevices. Butter-milk paint was used faithfully, then worn, and finally waxed. This variant was never meant to have a child-gate, but rather the seat was meant to be entirely open for two sitters.

The paint has been restored professionally on this writing arm chair. It was carefully analyzed in the crevices and especially underneath as being red over black, butter milk paint, re-painted, and then worn off appropriately at the major and natural wear points. The crest rail, desk surface, and seat are tulip polar, and various mixed hardwoods have been used for rails and stiles. The consensus opinion is that this is a typical Petersburg chair from the 1830s. In general, writing arm chairs are infrequently found available in the market, and southern ones even more so. This is an exquisite and beautiful Southern Pembroke table. The overall condition is remarkably fine and as found. The primary woods are black walnut and the secondary woods are southern yellow pine. The drawer face has inlaid banding, the apron has oval paterae, the apron edge has sawtooth banding, and the legs have vine inlay and what appears to be a hibiscus bloom inlay, and the legs end in inlaid cuffs, all beautifully accomplished. The consensus of opinion so far is that this is a South Carolina low country, probably Charleston, piece.

These are most often called a schoolmaster’s desk, but the whole truth would include that they were also used by clerks, pastors, and overseers. This one in particular has great statuesque lines in the Country Hepplewhite form, with what certainly appears to be old if not original paint, with mid-19th century or later construction, and is complete with old graffiti on the inside.

Once in a great while is a rived, hand-carved coffer from the Pilgrim century era ever seen. This one was made about 1580 to about 1640, in the Mannerist style, with hard yellow pine and wrought iron. It is a six-board chest, with decorative molding planed on the top and front sides to emulate applied molding and with decorative chip carving on the ends. The blacksmith work on the lengthy hinges and massive lock suggests added strengthening for long travels, as does the massive thickness of the timbers. The primary joints are ship-lapped and fastened with large rose-head nails, suggesting a coastal shipwright as the maker. The early colonies in Virginia, especially Jamestowne, Henricus, and Elizabeth Cittie, saw such coffers as the storage choice for the first pilgrims settling there. Microanalysis of the wood is pending.

These are mid-20th century, Chinese, carved elm, map or scroll weights. Each is mostly a mirror image of the other, with subtle differences. These are especially useful when unfolding maps for display, holding down the curled edges, but are intended for holding down any scroll. The only fault found is a small chip on the hat brim of one of the boatmen.

There are a number of fine art traditions found in China, one of which is tree root carving. This carving shows, apparently, a teak tree root or trunk, with enhanced carving of the root interior and the placement of a scholar holding a torch upward. In Chinese lore, a torch held upward represents life, whereas if held downward it represents death. This piece comes from a local collection made in the 1960s.

This is a complete original newspaper of the Scientific American, Volume 55, Number 24, published in New York on December 14, 1886. The front page is completely devoted to eight wood block prints of various views of the Miller School of Albemarle. On page 373, about one and one-half columns have a story of the history of the Miller School, from its founding in 1878 until 1886. The front page is disbound and has a small tear in the lower proper right side.

This is a beautiful, high-style Pembroke Table, made during the Georgian era in the Chippendale taste. Your eye can plainly see the hand-dressed surfaces, the dovetailed drawer, and the lustrous French polished top leaves. The X-stretcher retains its original, underside wrought iron support. This is one of those few pieces whose story actually appears to have some truth to it. The story is later recorded in George Sheraton’s book, Cabinet Dictionary, published in London in 1803, which states that it is a “type of breakfast table, from the name of the lady (Elizabeth) who first gave orders for one of them.” Lady Elizabeth Pembroke used her diminutive dining table in her private chamber, mostly for meals, but even for games and as a writing table. While it is English, many of these tables were exported to the South and used in Southern plantation homes. As noted, the present French polished surface is lustrous and recently rejuvenated by one of only a few such trained restorers, Tom Williamson of Albemarle Furniture Services, and the expectable probability is that this surface is good for another 25-50 years, the usual life of shellac.

This chair is attributed to being made by Robert Walker in his cabinet shop in Fredericksburg, Virginia in the late 18th century in the Hepplewhite design. The primary wood is mahogany and the secondary wood is yellow pine. This high-style chair shows a splat with an intricate carving of Prince of Wales feathers, with surrounding parallel curved bands, scrolls, and folds.

The feathered splat and the distinctive side stiles, having an especially curved and thick base, are both virtually a match to an earlier Chippendale arm chair currently owned by George Washington’s Mount Vernon and pictured on page 82 in the 2006 American Furniture edited by Luke Beckerdite for the Chipstone Foundation. The following photograph shows a close up of the chair on page 82:

Intriguingly, the Mount Vernon chair is described as having the crest and splat replaced in the 19th century. Further, the lineage of ownership is not clear, though they speculate that it appears to be in Augustine Washington’s probate inventory of 1764. While there is no provenance that this side chair was ever at Mount Vernon, it is not a coincidence that the splat and stiles are nearly identical to Robert Walker’s carving of a Mount Vernon-owned arm chair. In searching other Robert Walker pieces sold, there was a similarly fancy Walker side chair at Jeffrey Evans Auctions in Mt. Crawford, Virginia, without a historic provenance, and it fetched $28,750 on June 21, 2014! Brunk’s Auctions in Asheville, North Carolina sold a Walker slant-front desk, formerly owned by the Royal Governor, Thomas Lee, where it fetched over $218,000 on May 16, 2015! The buyer of this chair will not be faint hearted. An identified Virginia chair with a provenance is rare. None have been found in dealer’s inventories. It is indeed expensive and should be.

A number of other similar candlestands have appeared in the market and in dealer collections, all having the same “feel” of design. For each, the standard is heavy and the legs are high arched. They all are reported as made of black walnut. When Colonial Williamsburg decided to develop a Southern collection for the DeWitt-Wallace Museum, they too added one of these to their collection. It can be seen in their now classic reference book, Southern Furniture: 1680-1830, by Hurst and Prown, on pages 325 through 327. The CW collection piece is attributed to Southampton County, ca. 1830. There is also one in the Office in the Governor’s Mansion in Richmond, recently added to their collection. It had formerly been in the Mansion when Governor Pollard was in office, and it was attributed to King and Queen County. It can be seen in the following image:

This candlestand is considered from its overall design as being Country Empire, with vestiges of the late Federal Period style being present in the Hepplewhite-shaped legs that are somewhat square and tapered. The condition appears just fine and as found.

This is an American, probably Mid-Atlantic, Bird-Cage Arm Chair, made about 1800. The faux-bamboo turnings of the stiles, arm rails, and legs became the rage in Windsor chairs by 1800. It certainly seems that all known Windsors were painted, having such an array of various mixed woods that did not match. The painted surfaces of this chair have been professionally restored by William Lapham, MFA, of Schuyler in the 1980s. Bill micro-analyzed the paint traces in cracks and at joints and then duplicated them layer by layer, creating naturally worn areas from body contact. This chair is priced, however, as though it had lost its painted surface, even though it was expensively restored with buttermilk-based paint.

This is a New York chair that was once owned by the former 1821-1823 U. S. Congressman and then the former 1828-1848 Chancellor of New York, Reuben Hyde Walworth, as engraved on the plaque behind the crest rail and seen below:

Reuben Hyde Walworth was born in Bozrah, Connecticut, October 26, 1788; moved to New York with his parents, who settled on a farm near Hoosick in 1796; attended the common schools; taught school; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1809 and commenced practice in Plattsburgh in 1810; master in chancery and circuit judge in 1811; served in the War of 1812; aide-de-camp to Gen. Benjamin Mooers and division judge advocate with rank of colonel; elected to the Seventeenth Congress (March 4, 1821-March 3, 1823); judge of the fourth judicial district of New York 1823-1828; moved to Saratoga Springs, Saratoga County, N.Y., in October 1828; chancellor of the State of New York from 1828 to 1848; interment in Greenridge Cemetery in 1867.

The chair appears mostly original and as found except for the writing surface, which appears fresher, with a slightly different color, and without any craquelure or alligatoring to the paint as with the rest of the surfaces. The deep crest rail, the plank seat, and the simple turnings of the legs and stretchers are all together typical of Country Empire chairs. Also typical of a Writing Arm Windsor, besides the writing surface, is that there is a drawer below the seat. In the trade, a Writing Arm Windsor is especially rare to find and own.

This is an American Queen Anne candlestand. Its specific origin is arguable, but the consensus is
American. Because it has a compressed ball column or standard, some have considered that it would
appear to be Philadelphia. Its history of ownership, though, suggests it was a Virginia piece from the
home of Jacob Fry (d. 1814), the Shenandoah Valley cabinetmaker.
This candlestand is from the famous collection of Dr. and Mrs. Henry Deyerly of Harrisonburg, Virginia,
and it was purchased during the two-day 1995 auction that Sotheby’s conducted here in Charlottesville
under tents at the Boar’s Head Inn. The Sotheby’s label remains on the underside. A copy of the catalog,
with picture, and the sales receipt are available for the buyer, now being kept at the front desk. The
catalog should be read for a complete condition report and for the provenance.

This Chippendale side chair is attributed to Robert Walker (1710-1777) at his cabinet shop in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The primary wood is black walnut, and the secondary wood is yellow pine. The needlepoint seat, which is unlikely original, is nonetheless very old. There is one visible repair of a partial crack to the back of the crest rail near the ear. In terms of art history and decorative arts studies, this chair has gone through several changes in scholarly identification. In the 1937 two-volume work, American Antique Furniture, by Edgar Miller, Jr., this chair is shown in Photograph No. 147 as having been in the collection of Mrs. Miles White, Jr., with the judgment that it is only possibly American because it is “concave in the center” of the crest rail and therefore “somewhat unusual in our country.”

In the mid and later 20th century, because it has through-tenon mortises of the side seat rails, it was thought to have a Philadelphia origin by dealers and auction houses, as, for example, noted erroneously, by Lee Keno on the televised Antiques Road Show some years ago. The through-tenon shows, as follows:

During the 1960s through the 1980s, scholarship in Southern material culture had made a significant change, with museum exhibits and books about Southern furniture coming into the mainstream. In 1982, John T. Kirk wrote American Furniture and the British Tradition. On page 265, this chair is shown in Photograph No. 924 and now it is identified as “possibly Southern.” Most recently, 2006, the Chipstone Foundation published American Furniture, edited by Luke Beckerdite. In this book, two scholars, Robert A. Leath of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, and Tara Gleason Chicirda of Colonial Williamsburg, in two different chapters parsed their discoveries that Robert Walker and other Fredericksburg cabinetmakers had very identifiable designs. This chair in particular belongs to the school of work done only by Robert Walker during the era of 1745 through 1760. This chair appears to share a history with the Walker chairs in the dining room at Kenmore Plantation, as follows:

In searching other Robert Walker pieces sold, there was a much fancier Walker side chair at Jeffrey Evans Auctions in Mt. Crawford, Virginia and it fetched $28,750 on June 21, 2014! This dressing mirror was made by Meier and Hagen Furniture Makers in New York City between 1858 and 1888. Ernest Hagen (1830-1913) opened a cabinetmaking shop after working for years with others. He had an old shop mate, J. Matthew Meier, join him. Together, they made Colonial Revival furniture by hand. This is one of their pieces. The following shows the paper label on the back interior wall, as follows:

Besides retaining the paper label, what is also very unique is that the underside of the middle drawer has a rather detailed penciled inscription identifying the cabinetmaker, location, and costs of construction, as follows:

At first glance, this looks like a mahogany case with tiger maple drawer fronts, which speaks well of the maker! This is actually a pine chest with a faux painted case and with faux painted drawer fronts, a rare survivor from those people in the 1950s who formerly had a penchant for restoring the paint to the “natural” wood. Instead, this one still, miraculously, has its original paint! Chests of drawers are the most basic household piece today or, like this one, from 200 years ago, being made about 1815. The typical naming of this piece is to call it a Sheraton Chest. A better naming is American Fancy. The now classic book, American Fancy, written by Sumpter Priddy, shows chests and other painted pieces in exquisite detail from an academic and scholarly perspective (a book everyone should have in their library).

This is a plain and neat Country Federal corner cupboard from the Valley. It was found, of all places, at the major auction house in the Washington area, C. G. Sloan and Company in Bethesda, Maryland! It had been consigned by an executor of an estate in Middletown, Virginia. The scalloped upper case area seems to be very typical of such pieces often found in the Valley. The upper case has relatively modern paint inside and would look better with a coat of buttermilk-based paint.

This clothes press was acquired at a Sheriff’s Sale at a Keswick farm house in Albemarle County in 1986. Then, it had a fresh coat of regular white house paint, some of which can be seen on the back side. Sam Morris soon after removed the paint by hand, and followed that by hand waxing the original yellow pine surfaces, using the heat of his hands through vigorous rubbing. He deservedly signed his resulting work of art on the upper area of the back. This press is about mid-19th century, with wide timbers and cut nails with square heads, all in the Country Federal style. This is one of the most practical pieces ever for storage of books, CDs, or whatever.

Decades ago, a good honest country primitive bench seemed easily found. Now not so much. Most seem to be early to mid-20th century. This is a righteous, 19th century bench. Honest wear and use. Actually came off the porch of a country store in Pennsylvania and then from an old collection. The construction is typical of 19th century rural carpenters, with through-mortised tenons and angled wedges. You can not only feel the hand dressed surfaces, you can even see them. The maker only dressed up the front side with an apron, leaving the unseen back open.

This is a ship captain’s desk, probably coastal New England. As is typical, it is made of New England white pine, with orange varnish over the primary surfaces. From the wear seen, and from the construction noted, it is likely mid to late 19th century. This is indeed a rather unique surviving piece of nautical furniture, a real conversation starter. As with ship captain’s desks seen in museums, this one has inwardly slanted double pedestals to allow the captain to stand at his desk, to access his charts and navigation instruments in the storage area under the center lift-up lid. It also has large footprints for each pedestal plinth to provide stable placement on the floor of the Great Cabin.

The surfaces of the pine timbers are all hand dressed. The joints are butted and then nailed with early, square, iron nails. As would be expected, the drawers have early nail joinery. Several of the timbers are quite wide. The two-board top lid has one board that measures 15 ¼ inches in width, and the top boards of each side are also 15 ¼” wide. The drawer fronts are decorated with chamfered edges, and the interior front rail is also chamfered and ends with a lamb tongue’s carving. The interior has a hidden area under the center shelf.

This chest of drawers is a classic example of American Empire case pieces made about 1825. Note the top drawer is very deep for storing bonnets. Unique to this chest is the penciled description on the underside of the second drawer down. Written in period script is the following, as shown below:

Francis Scott Key was born in 1779, and he died in 1843. His estate and home was the Old Stone House, in Georgetown, Maryland. Here is a surviving image of his house from a period painting:

Francis Scott Key is, of course, best remembered for writing what became our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, during the War of 1812. Upon the death of Francis Scott Key in 1843, the Old Stone House descended to his son, Philip Barton Key. Philip Barton Key was born in 1818. As an adult, he became enamored of the wife of Congressman Daniel Sickles, who later became Major General Sickles in the Civil War. Sickles discovered the affair, and when he noticed Key near his home on February 27, 1859, he went outside in a rage and fatally shot Key. Edwin Stanton, who later was Secretary of War under Lincoln, defended Sickles and won an acquittal as a result of the first time use of a temporary insanity defense. The following wood-cut image showing the murder is from Harper’s Weekly:

To settle the estate of Philip Key, the contents of the house were sold on December 21, 1859. The buyer of this chest was Dr. Samuel Swope of Taneytown, not far from Georgetown. The road to Taneytown is today called the Francis Scott Key Highway. Dr. Swope is well-known in history for his treating of many wounded soldiers in the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg. Also unique to this chest are the carved initials behind one of the acanthus and hairy paw carved feet, “HL.” This is a possible reference to Honore Lannuier’s shop, a noted New York cabinetmaker, who was known for providing other cabinetmakers with similarly carved feet.

This Southern-attributed, Hepplewhite stand was found at an estate sale in the Shenandoah Valley and then marketed by Irongate Antiques of Occoquan, Virginia in 1981. It is made of mostly cherrywood with some mahogany, hand dressed and hand turned, in the late 18th or early 19th century. This Federal Period stand is well proportioned and has a delicate scale. It may have originally been used as a wine stand, given its height, or it is just a very tall candlestand. There is an old smithy repair to one leg. This candlestand is priced at $700.00.

This was acquired in 1980 from a retired Charlottesville postal employee who saved it back after it was thrown away at the Main Post Office on Market Street. It is folded as issued. The artist, Norman Rockwell, portrayed himself in the lower proper left corner, looking towards the viewer, as follows:

Though feint, there are stenciled markings on the undersides of the drop leaves, indicating this was made in Winchester, Virginia and “all kinds of furniture.” The stenciling is consistent with a mid-to late 19^th century manufacture, part of the well-known Colonial Revival era when bench-made furniture was made to resemble earlier period pieces.

This is an exquisite clock by a very well-known clockmaker, Benjamin Morris. He was born in Hilltown, Pennsylvania in 1748. He served as a private during the American Revolutionary War. It is reported that during his lifetime, he produced over 300 tall case clocks. His family genealogy is listed on online. He died in Hilltown in 1833. The best retail galleries sell his clocks, and a handsome few are sold each year at major auctions.

This chair is attributed to the workshop of Thomas Miller. Born in 1748 in Stirling, Scotland, he migrated to America and was working in Fredericksburg, Virginia by 1765. Unique to his 1770s chair design is the lobed ending at the top of his splat or back. This chair is made of black walnut with a yellow pine slip seat. Thomas Day was a free man of color, born 1801 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He learned cabinetmaking from his father, John Day. By 1824, Thomas Day had moved to Milton, North Carolina, where he opened his own cabinet shop, working there until his death in 1861. None of his pieces are signed. Only one piece of furniture retained a board from a shipping crate that had his name and address, thus verifying its origin. His signature, then, is his stylistic designs incorporated into his work. All known pieces of Day’s are by attribution. The best text reference is Thomas Day: Master Craftsman and Free Man of Color, by Patricia Marshall and Jo Leimenstoll, published in 2010.

On beds, Day was known for his rectilinear veneered panels, his octagonal bed posts, his newel post-like turnings for finials, his flattened-ball feet, his large and swelled c-scrolls, and his gothic embellishments. For comparison, note the previous image and the following close-up of a bed sold in 2014 at Farmer Auctions in Salem, Virginia and then look at the similarities in the next bed shown from the North Carolina Museum of History.

At first glance, this small chest looks much older, like Pilgrim period. It also looks like the paneled furniture of Eastern Virginia. The nails and wear, however, suggest an early 19^th century origin. Since the panels are flat, not raised, it more likely is Long Island or any of several other coastal communities such as New Jersey. What is especially desirable, regardless of its time and origin, is the original and nicely aged buttermilk paint! If you collect great paint, this is a piece for you.

Strtetcher-based tavern tables remain among the most favored pieces of collectors of colonial furniture. This rare surviving Southern table is all made of yellow pine, with a bread-board top over a plain apron supported by Mannerist turned legs in the William and Mary taste.
